iPhone 5 rumor roundup

(Credit: Josh Lowensohn/CNET)
After unveiling a marginally improved iPhone 4S in 2011 instead of a radically different iPhone 5, Apple has returned to its development labs to cook up (no pun intended) the next iteration of its popular phone. In 2012, we're fairly certain that the real iPhone 5 will roll out of Apple's gates and that the device should be a bigger leap forward than the 4S was.
That's why after taking some time off at the end of last year, we've resurrected CNET's iPhone 5 rumor roundup to cover the new tidbits from 2012. So join us again in watching the rumor mill churn. We'll add to it until we get the real thing; please let us know if we've left any gossip out.

IOS 6 limits the number of your apps, but a fix is on the way

The current developer's edition of iOS 6 restricts the number of apps you can run on your device. But the threshold is high, and a fix is on the horizon.
As revealed in a blog by a developer called Mid Atlantic Consulting, iOS 6 users who install more than 500 apps on their device will start to run into slow boots, auto-reboots, and other problems. Install as many as 1,000 apps, and the device won't boot at all.
How many people actually install more than 500 apps on their iPhone or iPad? That was apparently Apple's reaction, since the company initially showed little concern about this limitation.
But Mid Atlantic Consulting argued that if the iPhone is expected to replace your phone, portable gaming console, TV remote, and countless other devices, then Apple needs to make sure iOS can handle an unlimited number of apps. The developer even cited a quote by the late Steve Jobs in which he said that the only limit was the number of folders and apps per folder.

iTunes movies in the Cloud expands across the world

Many iTunes Cloud users outside the U.S. can now watch their favorite synced movies on any computer or iDevice.
As of yesterday, such countries as the U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, along with several in Latin America and the Asia Pacific region, are now on Apple's list for cloud-based movie support. This means that movies purchased from iTunes are automatically synced to the cloud and made available for viewing on any eligible device -- computer, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Apple TV.
Entertainment available through iTunes in the Cloud includes music, videos, movies, TV shows, books, and apps. People in the U.S. have long been able to synchronize all of these things. But the rollout has been slower for those abroad.

650,000-volt iPhone case is a real stunner

Seth Froom was the victim of a violent robbery last summer. His response was to create theYellow Jacket, an iPhone case crossed with a Taser. The project is currently up on Ingiegogo for fundraising.
As far as stun guns go, the Yellow Jacket makes sense in that you are likely to have it with you at all times, in a convenient place where you can reach it when you need it.

Apple and Samsung

In the ongoing judicial patent opposition between Apple and Samsung have another interim but important victory was gained by the creator of iPhone and iPad. A federal appeals court in Washington did not cancel the temporary ban on the sale and importation of Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets in the U.S., which was imposed Judge Lucy Koh from the city of San Jose.

iPhone 3GS Now Available For ₹9999 ($180) In India

Indian carrier Aircel has started selling the three year old iPhone 3GS for approximately $180 (₹9,999) along with an advance rental of $55 (₹3,000). Previously, the device was being sold at a price of approximately $360 (₹19,990).
Although the purchase would require subscribing to a mandatory data plan, the device would still be unlocked and available without a contract.
The upfront $55 rental for 12 months gives subscribers unlimited 3G data (throttled to 2G speeds after 2GB usage) for a year, or unlimited 2G data with 1,000 free voice minutes and 2,500 free messages monthly, for 6 months.
The combined cost of the device and the mandatory data plan totals up to $235, which is still a pretty good deal for a device that would be getting the iOS 6 upgrade, and be compatible with most apps on the App Store.
It's highly unlikely that Apple is behind this huge price drop, but this is a route that the company is very likely to take after the new iPhone is announced.

Bringing the iPhone 3GS to a lower price bracket enables Apple to better compete with Android handsets that are being sold around the $200 mark in various countries. This is one of the primary reasons why Android dominates hugely in markets like India.
