Samsung tries to tempt iPhone owners with iOS and iTunes data transfer utility

Samsung has recently launched Easy Phone Sync for Galaxy owners that want to bring data from their old iPhone over to their shiny new Android devices. The desktop application is supposed to be able to transfer music, videos, podcasts, pictures, contacts, and text messages to any Galaxy device, inclulding the latest SGS3. iTunes music has to be DRM-free in order to get transferred. Samsung UK's Simon Stranford said: .
We’re really proud to announce the launch of this new application and can’t wait to hear what our new and existing customers think of it. We know that traditionally iPhone users have been reluctant to switch to an Android device because they couldn’t use iTunes to manage their content. Easy Phone Sync means people can now enjoy their iTunes content on a Samsung Galaxy phone. What’s more is that it’s really easy for them to do, and literally takes five minutes to set up.
To date, the primary tool to pull off iTunes syncing to Android was DoubleTwist, but there are plenty of alternatives out there, though few of them with a manufacturer's seal of approval. Samsung's solution is licensed from a company called Media Mushroom, who haspreviously released their sync solution for Android on their own.
Predictably, many users are commenting on lack of compatibility, but keep reaching for that rainbow, guys. I'm sure it'll get patched someday. To be fair, the tool was launched in the UK, so there are likely to be some regional locks in place.
Anyone thinking of switching to Android any time soon? Is being locked in to iTunes actually stopping you from taking the leap? Anyone that already has a Galaxy can download the desktop tool here.

iOS 6 Includes Support For Government Alerts

iOS developers who were seeded iOS 6 beta continue to discover new features in iOS 6 that Apple didn't mention or showcase at the WWDC 2012 Keynote.
CNET reports that iOS 6 includes the ability to receive U.S. government alerts via push notifications during an emergency or disaster.
The new feature allows users to receive alerts from local, state, and federal officials through the initiative FEMA's Integrated Public Alert and Warning System. Users can also receive Amber Alerts - a child abduction alert issued upon the suspected abduction of a child.
The National Weather Service is also expected to start issuing Wireless Emergency Alerts by the end of June, which means that users will be able to receive weather related alerts on their iPhones.
According to folks at Emergency Managementwho were the first to notice this new feature report that it will be available on all iOS devices that are compatible with iOS 6. As you can see in the screenshot below, you will get an option to opt out via the Settings app. There will be toggles to enable or disable Emergency alerts and Amber alerts.
In iOS 5, Apple had added the option to receive notifications from Japan's advanced earthquake early-warning system.
It makes sense to add support for such emergency alerts in iOS and other mobile operating systems as the chances of us seeing the alert on our mobile phones is a lot higher than hearing it on radio or TV, which have been traditionally used to communicate such emergency alerts.

Analyst: Next iPhone, iPad Mini to Launch in September

iPhone 5 mystery 275
While most rumors indicate that Apple will unveil the next iPhone in October, an analyst today said the highly anticipated smartphone could make its debut a month earlier.
"Looking forward to an exciting September from Apple," analyst Brian White with Topeka Capital Markets, wrote in a note to clients Monday following a round of meeting with his contacts in Taipei. "Regarding the widely anticipated iPhone 5, we believe a September launch is more likely than October."
Even better — the Cupertino tech giant will launch its sixth-generation iPhone alongside the much talked-about "iPad mini," White predicted. Recent rumors indicate that the scaled-down iPad will measure in at 7 inches, and be priced competitively at around $200 to $250.
On the next-gen iPhone front, White said he "gathered more data points" supporting hisearlier prediction that the coveted device will have a unibody frame, which he believes will be manufactured by Hon Hai Precision, and another company. However, he put into question rumors that the body of the next iPhone will made of a super-tough alloy called Liquidmetal.
"Our contact was skeptical around the plethora of news stories highlighting Liquidmetal Technologies' potential involvement in the iPhone 5," White wrote.
Meanwhile, some have speculated that Apple could unveil the next iPhone as early as next week at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. But don't get your hopes up. Apple didn't unveil the iPhone 4S until last October, and most rumors claim the tech giant is planning to keep a similar timeframe for the launch of its next iPhone.
The next-gen iPhone is largely expected to sport a larger, 4-inch screen. Other persistent rumors indicate that the phone will be about 20 percent thinner than its predecessor, with a metal backside, and smaller dock connector.
As for what Apple has up its sleeve for WWDC, rumors point to a revamped iCloud,Facebook integration with iOS 6, and a 3D mapping solution, among other things. PCMag will be at WWDC, which kicks off June 11, so stay tuned for all the details.

TomTom Confirms Mapping Deal with Apple

While Apple has worked hard to build its in-house mapping expertise, the company still needs to rely on some outside partners to assist it with the massive project of developing its own mapping and turn-by-turn navigation services. A number of observers noted references to "TomTom and others" in various locations within Apple's new Maps app for iOS 6, and now the mapping company has confirmed in a brief press release that it has indeed struck a deal with Apple.
TomTom has signed a global agreement with Apple for maps and related information. No further details of the agreement will be provided.

The Associated Press noted earlier today that TomTom's stock was up 12% on the news, with it now approaching gains of 15% for the day.

Amazon Launches Cloud Player App for iPhone

More than a year after Amazon introduced its Cloud Drive and Cloud Player services as it was racing to beat Apple's iCloud services to market, the company has nowannounced the release of a native Cloud Player app [App Store] for iPhone and iPod touch.

With this new app, customers have full access to their Cloud Player music libraries and also can seamlessly add playlists that are currently on their iPhone or iPod touch.

iPad access to Amazon Cloud Player has been available since last July as a device-optimized web player, with the iPhone and iPod touch also having had partial compatibility.

Apple potentially valued at billions of dollars

Not many companies in the world, the market capitalization of more than $ 500 billion, and Apple among these. In particular, at the moment, this amount is $ 545 billion Success, huge profits, bright future? In general, yes, but there are nuances. For example, colleagues at Apple's capitalization, reaching this result, actually ran into a ceiling, growth stopped and the prospects ahead are not observed. Although this does not apply to the company from Cupertino, and this is why and what are the reasons for the difficulties of other "billionaires" - see below. turn
Analyst Brian White (Brian White) from the Topeka Capital Markets became interested in the issue of reaching $ 500 billion capitalization, and drew attention to the sharply reduced revenue growth in these. Apple iOS will kick in 40 percent of Google's mobile sales, says analyst

Thanks to its app licensing deals with Apple, Google will earn about 40 percent of its mobile sales from iOS, says analyst Gene Munster.

Google will have arch-rival Apple to thank for a huge chunk of its mobile revenue in 2012.
The search giant's licensing deals with Apple over its Maps and Search apps have been a healthy cash cow since the iPhone debuted in 2007. This year will be no exception.
In an investors note released yesterday, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said he expects Google to generate around $4.5 billion in mobile sales this year. And iOS will kick in the largest or close to the largest chunk of that.
iOS will account for around 40 percent of Google's total mobile search revenue, or $1.6 billion, estimates Munster, which ultimately means iOS will generate around 2 percent of Google's total sales for the year.
But what happens if Apple replaces Google Maps with its own in-house map app? Recent reports suggest that Apple has already cooked up a 3D Maps app set to replace Google's appas the default on iOS devices. Regardless, Munster doesn't expect any significant changes to the numbers.
Google Maps will still live on in the App Store, freely available for any person to download, the analyst said. Google recently revealed that its Maps service has attracted more than 1 billion users across the world. Google offers a host of other apps for iOS users, but the Maps app could prove to be the most popular among them even if it's no longer the iOS default.
And Google isn't standing still with Maps.
The company unveiled yesterday a host of innovations to the service, including 3D images, offline use, and more shots of Street View.
Still, the move by Apple to replace Google Maps as the default may be just the latest attempt to squeeze out the search giant.
"Moving forward, we expect a continued tug-of-war between Apple and Google," Munster said. "We believe Google is likely to push more of its apps through the App Store, including Chrome, while Apple will continue to innovate around discovery on the iPhone through Siri. Net-net, we believe the core user experience on iOS will remain largely unchanged even if Google Maps is replaced."

What I want to see in iOS 6

It's hard to say what Apple will announce at the beginning of WWDC on Monday, but here is my feature wish list if iOS 6 is announced during the keynote.
As is always the case with every Apple event, there's really no way we can know what the company will announce at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on Monday. I'm personally hoping Tim Cook will walk out there with the iPhone 5 (my iPhone 4 is getting a little rough around the edges), but others are saying that won't come until fall. We're probably about due for a Mountain Lion update as well, but many are saying that won't be here until later in the summer.

Hot new action games for iOS

I've been tracking some new iOS games recently that are all very high-quality, and though they don't really fit a theme, I highly recommend all three.

I look through the new iOS releases and popular apps several times a day to find hidden gems to talk about here at the end of the week. Usually I try to come up with a theme to tie them all together, but I've been tracking some games over the past couple of weeks that are all good, but can't be wrapped up neatly in a nice little package.
Still, though the games are from different genres, each one has something unique to offer and I hope you'll be able to pick a game from the genre you like best -- I promise you won't be disappointed.
This week's collection of iOS games are all high-quality titles I've been playing recently. The first is a racing game of a sort, where you use grappling hooks to fling your car around a racetrack. The second game is the sequel to one of my favorite iOS snowboarding games, except in this one, you're skateboarding. The last is an Angry Birds type of destruction game, but goes the extra mile with a fully 3D viewpoint and other extras while you play.
Slingshot Racing
As you slide around the track, look out for speed-boost pads to give yourself an advantage.

Slingshot Racing ($2.99 - iOS Universal) has a new angle on the racing genre in which you latch on to anchors in order to make your car go around corners. It's set in a steampunk environment and you'll use grappling hooks to make all of your turns, making this arcade racer's focus more about timing than it is steering. At first I found it kind of gimmicky, but after a few rounds of exploring the levels, I realized this game can really get addictive.
The control system in Slingshot Racing is what makes this game
